Therapy Books We’re Recommending in 2026

At Calm Harbour Counselling, we thought we’d start out the year reflecting on the books that have made a big impact on us as people, how we support clients and continue growing as therapists. Whether you’re in therapy, considering it, or simply curious about emotional wellbeing, these books offer gentle insight, practical tools, and a sense of being seen.

Angela’s top three book recommendations:

1. Set Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra Glover Tawwab
This book continues to be a favorite for good reason. Who doesn’t want more peace in their life? It’s a big promise, and Tawwab writes with clarity and compassion about how to identify your limits and communicate them in everyday life. Her writing is straightforward and validating, especially for those who grew up in environments where boundaries were discouraged or ignored. I often recommend this to clients who feel overwhelmed or unheard, are recovering from people-pleasing, or unsure how to ask for what they need.

2. The Autistic Burnout Workbook by Dr. Megan Anna Neff
Dr. Neff offers a deeply affirming guide for neurodivergent folks navigating autistic burnout – a topic still often misunderstood or overlooked. This workbook stands out for how it invites self-reflection without shame and provides language that helps many people finally name what they’ve been experiencing. It’s especially helpful for clients exploring late-diagnosed autism (I sometimes recommend it to my ADHDers too) and those seeking a more compassionate relationship with their sensory, emotional, and energetic needs.

3. What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo
This memoir is a beautifully written exploration of complex PTSD, intergenerational trauma, and the ongoing work of healing. Foo blends her personal narrative with research and interviews in a way that’s honest, moving, and informative. Clients dealing with trauma often find comfort in seeing the nonlinear, layered nature of healing reflected in her story. For therapists, it’s also a reminder of the importance of curiosity, cultural humility, and listening to clients as the experts of their own experience.

These are a great place to start, and if you find yourself wanting to discuss what they made you feel, think, and how it applies to you and your life – reach out. Let’s start a two-person book club together!

Up next… Stacey’s recommendations! Stay tuned.
