Holidays can come with a lot of expectations. Perfect photos, heartwarming stories, and cheerful gatherings often fill our screens, giving the impression that everyone else is celebrating a “picture-perfect” day. But the truth is, holidays look different for everyone—and that’s perfectly okay.
For those spending this time alone or opting for non-traditional celebrations, it’s easy to feel out of place or like you’re “doing it wrong” or your experience isn’t enough. Here’s a gentle reminder:
- You’re not required to follow traditions that don’t resonate with you. Skipping holiday dinners, choosing not to decorate, or deciding to do nothing at all doesn’t mean you’re missing out. It’s an act of honoring what feels right for you.
- Rest is not a waste of the day. Whether you’re recharging with a good book, watching your favorite shows, or disconnecting from social media, there’s no need to “prove” how you spent your holiday. Your day has value, even if it’s quiet.
- Memories can be made in your own way. Maybe it’s ordering takeout instead of cooking a big meal, planning a solo adventure, or creating a new tradition that’s unconventional but meaningful to you and your loved ones. The most important part is that it works for you.
Holidays are not about meeting external expectations. They’re about finding moments of peace, joy, or comfort—no matter how big or small. You are not less worthy because your holiday doesn’t look like someone else’s highlight reel.
So if you’re spending this season in your own way, know that you are enough. Your holiday, whatever it looks like, is valid simply because it reflects you.
Celebrate your own way this season—you deserve it.
